Still Waters Do Run Deep

The worse that might be said of our people, given the right fever: they'd pursue you to the grave. No further.

Now they? Hmm. I've heard it said they would track you to the ends of eternity. Then push you over.

How messed up is that? You tell me.

We don't go there. They don't come here. That's how it's always been. And we were fine that way.

Fine. I've kept the faith with my people. Now they stand me down. Since that bridge, since that song, every Tom, every Dick, every Harry is leering at me and my child, steering as if we're parading with flames for hats, as if we're walking in circles with buggers in our nose, with a big L stamped on our foreheads. Why?

Why us? Why my child? Give me one good reason.

Still waters run deep. I know that.

Call me suspicious if you want, but we all know still waters run deep. And that river is deep.

Yes that river is deep!

We all know that song is not just a song. It is an anthem. I know that. You know that. And anyone that's not deaf can clearly hear what it is saying. There is no hidden code in it. Not hidden from me.

Many think there is a hidden code in there somewhere. They think those people are smart. Tricky smart.

Tricky smart, I agree, but nothing hidden. Didn't they speak their intentions in plain words? They are coming. They are brazen.

Yes. They are coming. If that's not the clearest thing coming out from that song then that sky is not blue. They are coming happily.

They are going to cross that bridge. That's exactly what their anthem says. I can hear it. They are here. They sing it. "I'm on your side." Well! What exactly does that mean? You tell me.

Go ahead. Forgive me if I seem a little suspicious, but I know and you know exactly what it means. It means they have infiltrated us and more are coming. Yes, they are coming. More will cross that bridge.

They are not the least bit subtle about their intentions. Hidden code! They say, "I'll take your part when darkness comes."

Now you tell me. Isn't that a clear warning, a bold shot across the river? I know darn well it is. You know it is. They come like thieves in the night. They come when you are tired and weary. They come when you feel small. They come to lie down. How sick is that? But they chose my bed. My bed!

Why my bed?

Why?

Who likes strangers in their beds? Huh?

I had friends - before that bridge. I will lay me down. I will lay me down. They are so upfront and content about breaking down doors and butting into other people's business. That's how strange their ways are. They want to steal me away, troubles and all. That's kidnapping. It's wrong. And they sing joyously about it. They'll come for you too.

Strange ways they have. But we like our ways. We don't go there. Why should they come here?

We weren't looking for trouble. But I know who built that bridge. Not us! Call me suspicious, but do they have wings? No! Then mark my words. More will cross that bridge. If I but cry, they'll cross that bridge, and try to catch me off my guard, and steal my tears away. Can you believe it? They want even my tears!

It is in their anthem. It's been their plan all along to deprive us. No one in his or her right mind builds a bridge without a plan. No one but a fool.

But I won't cry. No, I won't cry. I'll be wide awake. Still waters do run deep.

It really didn't have to come to this? Not at all.

Granpa had one dying request. That's all. He wasn't looking for trouble. He was not a man of trouble. We were trying to honor his dying request. That's all. And why did it have to happen at that moment? Huh? You tell me. Why couldn't they leave well alone, huh? We don't go there. They don't come here. That's how it has always been. And everything was fine that way. No more. That bridge!

Let me tell you the story. I promise I won't cry. Do you want to hear my story? We weren't looking for trouble. They touched my child.
